Business Basics for the Professional Visual Artist - Learn the basics you must have to be considered a professional artist, beginning with your business name, tagline, elevator speech, business card and portfolio. A step-by-step checklist is provided to help get your business off the ground (or take it to the next level), including resources for training and education.

Building or Improving Your Portfolio - Elements of a professional portfolio are reviewed in detail with examples of how to make your résumé, artist statement, price list and images stand out. Note: Each artist will be given an opportunity to have their résumé critiqued (at no charge), either during the workshop or by email after the event.

Pricing Guidelines for Artists - Develop a pricing structure that works for you and your retailers. Includes how to deal with matting and framing expenses for 2D work, as well as shipping, and pricing for commissioned works.

Defining and Reaching Your Target Market - Examines the pros and cons of various sales methods (galleries, festivals, expos, public art programs, licensing, agent/dealer, wholesale, direct sales, etc). Artists will learn how to define their market and what steps are needed to reach that target market.

Galleries 101 - This workshop provides valuable tips on how to target professional galleries, both online and in person. You will learn what to look for and how to ask the tough questions before deciding whether a gallery would be a good match for you and your work.

Consignment Issues and Contract Negotiations - Beyond exclusivity and commission percentage, there are many issues to consider in a consignment agreement. Many of the same items apply for a simple exhibition agreement. Also, accepting commissions can be a nightmare without a proper contract. Tips regarding fifteen topics are included, plus problems to avoid, and how to diplomatically handle negotiations.

Cultivating Collectors - Determine which clients are serious about collecting your work and how to develop a relationship to encourage future opportunities and repeat sales.

Legal Issues - Learn about your legal rights as an artist, including copyright, moral rights, photographic rights, issues related to working with an assistant, and more. A list of helpful resources will also be provided.

Using the Internet to Increase Exposure and Sales - The Web doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We will discuss blogs, e-newsletters, and You Tube, as well as social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The handout will include links to sites that will help you get started.
